This is the first of two posts about what I find to be MY beach essentials. In this first post I cover makeup (mostly) and in the next, skincare.
After looking at the photo above you can obviously tell that I am in no way low maintenance. This is quite a pared down version of what I ACTUALLY brought. What I bring on trip and what I end up using are far different. Let’s just say that I need to learn to pack lighter or that I REALLY like to have choices.
In this post, I’m going to focus on the products that I USED on my last beach trip. Those products will be broken up into three categories: Changelings, New Loves, and OGs.
These are the products that the what stays the same, but the who changes. For example: I’m going to use an eyeshadow palette, but which and by who?
Colourpop has been on a roll this year banging out new product after new product. So it isn’t really surprising that quite a few of their new releases made the trip. The Knockout Pressed Powder Face Duo is gorgeous. The blush, Excuse My French, is a bright pop of warm peach (lovely on slightly tanned skin) and the highlighter, Like to Watch, is a golden tangerine glow. For the pressed shadows/pigments, I made my own quad (L-R): Take A Break- a soft peach shimmer with gold flip, Running Late- a matte muted light orange, Centerfold- a matte bright pinky coral, Making Moves- a matte hot red coral. These are not my “usual” eyeshadow colors, but for summer and the beach I enjoy the bright pops of color. I HIGHLY recommend any of Colourpop’s Pressed Powder Face Duos and the pressed shadows are fantastic.
As far as lip products go, I don’t have any set go tos for the beach. I always, always carry a lip balm. For the beach, I like an ultra moisturizing one with an SPF (SUPER IMPORTANT!). I didn’t realize until last minute that my stash (*cough* hoard) contained no lip balm with SPF. Recently, I received Hempz Herbal Lip Balm and so I brought that along. I ended up really liking the Hempz so if not a beach repeat, it will most likely make its way to my purse. (Here is an SPF alternative also by Hempz: Daily Herbal Lip Balm with SPF 15)
A couple of other lip products I found myself wearing were the Curvii Ultra Glossy Lip (semi-sheer peachy nude) and Lippie Pencil (beige peach) from the ILUVSARAHII x Colourpop Collab. And YES, this trip was heavy on the CP products.
First on this list is the MOST important beach product, SPF.
This Spring I received a deluxe sample of the Coola Mineral BB Cream Matte Tint SPF 30 (quite a mouth full!). My face reacts to Chemical SPF so I was excited to try a new Mineral one. Not only does my skin not react, it includes great ingredients that I’m happy to put on my face (Rosehip Oil, Flax Seed Oil, Evening Primrose, Shea Butter, Plankton Extract). I couldn’t find a reason not to love this product and it became my Daily SPF.
Coola Mineral BB Cream works for a variety of skin types. It just depends on the skincare that is used before applying. For my dry skin, I apply the whole shebang (serum, moisturizer, facial oil) then the SPF. My BF (oily skin) just slaps the Coola SPF right on. The tint is quite sheer, but it does somehow even out your skin tone and blur fine lines and pores. It is non-greasy with a matte finish that helps to keep shininess at bay. In the Summer heat I often wear only the Coola Mineral BB Cream with concealer for lighter coverage. On those days when a full face of makeup is needed, I find no issues wearing it under makeup. In fact, it functions EXACTLY like a mattifying primer.
I recommend Coola Mineral BB Cream SPF 30 Matte Tint for anyone to try. SPF is SO SO important and both my dry, sensitive skin and my BF’s oily skin love it.
Kat Von D Beauty
Another brand that has been heavy on the new releases this past year is Kat Von D Beauty. One of my favorite brands, I have fallen hard for quite a few of their newer products. The Lock-It Concealer Crème has become my go to concealer. It is also a great beach concealer because of its long wear. I use the shades Light 9 (slightly peachy, great for under eye correction), Light 11 (on the warm side of neutral, close to my skin tone), and the magical White Out (to mix in and brighten).
The Kat Von D Everlasting Lip Liner is another of my beach essentials. If you haven’t tried these liners yet, they are amazing as lip and eye liners, having incredible staying power as both. For beach wear, I use them as smudgy liners in my bottom waterline. They give a great pop of color and stay put all day. My beach favorites are Poe (deep, cool cobalt blue), Sinner (vampy plummy purple), and A-GO-GO (neon orange).
Baby Bat Beauty
One of my favorite Indie Brands, Baby Bat Beauty, which is cruelty-free and vegan, makes two products that have become recent loves and are great beach makeup. Their Dew Drops are gorgeous liquid highlighters with multiple uses and some serious staying power. My favorite is Celestial Goddess, a pearly white shade. The Dew Drops are great on their own as a highlighter or can be worn mixed with moisturizer (foundation, too, but not my cup of tea on the beach) for an all over dewy glow. Baby Bat’s Translucent Setting Powder, a favorite of both mine and Kristen’s, is perfect for keeping your night time beach makeup in check over dinner and cocktails. (HERE you can read Kristen’s post about Baby Bat’s Translucent Setting Powder)
These are my Holy Grails, my OGs, of beach makeup.
First, two very underrated brands, Blinc Makeup and The BrowGal.
I will start with Blinc. Both Blinc’s Mascara Amplified and Eye Shadow Primer in Light are my HG’s at home and at the beach. Both products are not traditionally waterproof, but are water resistant. The mascara is a tubing mascara (meaning it forms tubes around your lashes) so water does not cause it to run or remove. It is SO much better than waterproof mascara. I HATE removing them! When you are ready to remove it, Mascara Amplified comes off easily with cleanser and water. The eye primer provides the same lasting power. Once you apply your shadows over the Blinc Primer, they are not going anywhere until you remove them. Go ahead sleep in them, they’ll be there just the same in the morning. Get splashed in the waves, swim a bit. As long as you don’t get your head drenched or rub your eyes with water, your mascara and shadows will last through it all.
The BrowGal by Tonya Crooks
As for The BrowGal, the Eyebrow Gel is clear, provides hold, and seals in and provides water/sweat resistance to any color/product underneath. The Convertible Brow comes in three different color options (1-Dark, 2-Brown, 3-Light) with 3 different shades of powder in each: a warm, a cool, a neutral. I have almost black hair and find 2-Brown to be more than dark enough for me. The Convertible Brow is one of those great multi-tasking products. It’s in powder form and can be used that way or add a touch of water and use it as a pomade. Once it dries, it’s like it never was wet, the powder does not change at all. Use the Eyebrow Gel over The Convertible Brow and you have water resistant, beach ready brows that will last all day.
Last, but not least are Colourpop’s good ol’ Super Shock Shadows. Easy to apply. They last all day and the more shimmery/glittery ones are perfect for the beach. I apply these with my finger. No primer. No crease shades. Just a tiny bit of finger painting and I’m good to go. This trip my go to shades were On The Rocks- warm metallic bronze with purple & gold glitter, Catnap- metallic pink copper with pink & copper sparkle, DGAF- muted orangey-red with brown undertones & loads of green-gold glitter, Jinxie- pale warm gold with a pearl finish.
**[Blue Mascara is a beach favorite of mine. I am mentioning it separately because I bought the tube before I went cruelty-free. This is it’s 3rd summer (Don’t judge! I’ve probably used it 12 times total, nearly always at the beach) and it’s last. Any recommendations for a bright blue CF mascara like the one in pic above?? PLZ leave them in the comments below. Thanks!]
These makeup products were my favorites and essentials on my last beach trip. I know that Summer is nearly over, but I’m planning one more beach go-round in September. Unfortunately, it will only be for a few days, but fortunately it will be in Long Island.
Hope you enjoyed my little ramble in makeup land and expect the second post on my Beach Skincare later this week. Til then…luv ya XX
??What are some of your favorite makeup products for the Beach?? Feel free to leave some recommendations in the COMMENTS. I love trying out new makeup!!
